A recent seminar I co-hosted (DATA-PSST! http://data-psst.bangor.ac.uk/) concluded that new methods are needed to examine issues of transparency, trust, accountability and privacy; particularly for those who research political elites, social movements and activism. Some have raised concerns that journalists and academics may need to protect themselves and develop new strategies for this research environment. Elites are notoriously difficult to access, hackers are increasingly targeting universities and information sources previously utilised such as FOI are under attack… As these changing technology and transparency arrangements present significant methodological challenges for all future researchers examining how power is deployed in society, Lisa Stampnitzky and I are hosting this workshop to bring together researchers developing and deploying innovative solutions.
